Services
I provide a range of editorial services to help authors refine their writing. I specialize in editing academic texts for readability. This includes application essays, abstracts, journal articles, theses, dissertations, and book chapters. My services include various editing approaches: stylistic editing, English editing, copy editing, proofreading, and writing consultation. These types of edits are most useful with a complete draft of your project or with a section of the project with which you feel comfortable.
-
Stylistic editing: At a higher level of editing, I can help to make your text's wording more straight-forward and look for consistency throughout your project.
-
English editing: I aim to align your project with conventional academic English usage without losing your authorial voice.
-
Copy editing and proofreading: zoom in on aspects like basic fact-checking, grammar, punctuation, and citation style.
-
Writing consultation: a live discussion, over chat or video chat, during which you and I can discuss your writing in broader strokes. We can consider various approaches and talk about your writing goals. This approach enables us to revise your work and consider the impact of each revision in real-time.
While these features of your text are small, ascertaining that they're correct will polish your project and make your writing more clear and accessible.

About Shelby Haber
Hello! I'm Shelby Haber, an editor and English teacher based in Montreal, Quebec. During my BA (University of Alberta, 2021) and MA (McGill Univeristy, 2023), my official task was to study twentieth-century Irish literature, but my real joy was working with student journals. I helped to create the Peer-to-Peer Editor Training Program at Spectrum journal, and I was the Founding Managing Editor at Caret journal. Through these opportunities and through my own experience writing many graduate-level research projects, I fell in love with the process of refining texts to be clear and accessible. My favourite experiences have been working with English-Second-Language authors. I also enjoy reading absurdly large novels, singing in the St. Patrick's Basilica choir, and trying new dessert recipes.
